Scrapture

Graphic Design

The Challenge

To create a game that effectively demonstrates the power of cult thinking, but make it fun and portable.

The Team

Phillip Schmitte is our Game Designer, Jesus Garay is the Writer and Editor, and I am the graphic designer. Together we utilized rigorous research, play testing, and focus groups to develop Scrapture over the course of a few years.

The Game

Scrapture is a resource-development game for 2 to 4 players. During the game players attract initiates, fill up their shrines, send their followers on missions, and discover ancient relics. Players must adapt to their opponents’ maneuvers if they wish to become the most powerful cult leader.

Long after the collapse of our civilization, people begin to discover mysterious and powerful relics. Cults form in fascination and awe of these items, guided by charismatic leaders who vie for supremacy.

As one of these cult leaders you will attract followers to your cult, send them out on missions, and acquire new relics. You and your followers will use these relics to display the power of your cult.

The cult leader who garners the most influence over the masses will claim victory.

My Role

I worked as the graphic designer for this project, but my role expanded as the reach of the game expanded. In addition to developing the design of the game cards, I created marketing materials, designed the rulebook, and created a website landing page.

What I Learned

This project has been ever-evolving. My biggest lesson during this project was not to hold on too hard to a design decision, as our decisions were ultimately guided by user testing. In the case of designing a card game, the experience of the user trumps how something looks, and our main goal was not to create a game that was aesthetically pleasing, but one that offered fun and seamless play. I also learned a lot about prepress printing, as we created lots of sample decks.
