LegalZoom

UX/UI

My Role

I was hired by the LegalZoom Silicon Valley R&D team to create proof-of-concept mockups for potential new products, and to assist the R&D team in creating effective UIs for complex data. LegalZoom wanted to help people navigate complex legal situations with less expense, and as a result we often worked to simplify especially large or especially complex issues.

What I Learned

The team mainly worked in the vector program Sketch for wire framing and design, and utilized the prototyping program InVision to present new app concepts. I worked quickly to become proficient in both of these programs.

I also learned how to create user stories and use them to make a more interesting prototype. Part of the design process was creating a compelling user story and workflow that could be presented to corporate or marketing groups.

It perhaps goes without saying that I gained a lot of preliminary knowledge in the legal workings of such things as probate, business incorporation, hiring, and contracts.

Results

While my time at LegalZoom was some of the most fun and  interesting I’ve had as a freelance designer, the R&D group was eventually consolidated and moved back to corporate headquarters in Southern California. While I wasn’t able to continue working with them, I did collaborate with other LegalZoom R&D alumni on their own projects.

“Cindy is fantastic — super flexible, collaborative and efficient! More importantly, as a designer, Cindy listens to our needs, brings insights to the user experience, and solves the task at hand through her clean, thoughtful designs.
